OPTO41100 Evidence-based Clinical Case Management 100 Full year Undergraduate Level 4 Christine Dickinson Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 50.0 <div>To give the student an opportunity to present a selection of case records which provide examples of the range of patients seen, the quality of patient care given and provide an insight into the level of the student’s skill in case analysis and case management. </div>  At the end of this unit you will be able to:Show evidence of the full scope of practice of an optometrist.Show evidence of the ability to manage patients with a range of presentations, and communicate the management to the patient.Show evidence of management by an optometrist within a multi-disciplinary team, and inter-professional communication. Understand the principles of, and use, evidence-based practice. The learning will be based on peer- and self-evaluation and discussion around student-generated and scripted case records presented on the discussion board. Case Record FormatStudents will be introduced to a couple of alternative formats during the first semester, but these are not in any way prescriptive. Students are encouraged to include details of any unusual findings and a brief justification of the management adopted. The patient investigation and management should be clear from the record without any need for further clarification. The rationale for investigation and management and an indication of the prognosis and follow-up should be included in a discussion which includes citations from relevant literature if appropriate.Some cases will be considered in greater depth ("extended") to include critical analysis of the literature on a relevant topic.    0 Other 100% The student is required to write up case records of 10 patients seen during the placements. Three of the 5 records from each placement are to be amplified into an “extended case study”. It is expected that an extension will involve a critical analysis of 3-5 research papers which relate to the topic.  The extension should be clearly separate, and is not simply a “long discussion”The records will be submitted in two instalments:Set 1 = 5 records from placement 1.Set 2 = 5 records from placement 2 Case Selection for Assessment (65% of the marks)The case records presented should have the following features:1. a referral letter drafted by the student2. the refraction and management of a low vision patient3. appropriate clinical investigations for a glaucoma suspect4. complex dispensing5. the refraction and management of a patient with abnormal visual development6. the refraction and management of a patient requiring contact lenses7. the use of advanced instrumentation to aid diagnosis8. the role of the optometrist within a multidisciplinary team9. the use of a diagnostic drug10. free choiceAll submitted record marks will be moderatedThe student are allocated a time to submit a sample of their records to the Group Discussion Board on Bb) to receive feedback/advice from colleagues and unit co-ordinator. A specific  student will be assigned as a “primary reader” for the record and they will be required to submit their analysis of the record within 10 days. The quality of that contribution will be marked based on how many relevant/irrelevant points were identified, and how useful the feedback would be to the submitting student. These critical analyses will contribute 10% to the overall unit mark.  There will also be formal summative assessment based on scripted records under exam conditions in the middle of each placement, and at the end of Placement 1 (25% of the marks).  Advice will be given on preparation of the records, and feedback will be available through the discussion board; the placement supervisor will also advise and encourage.
