OPTO40811 Clinical Placement 1 40 Semester 1 Undergraduate Level 4 Caroline Thompson Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 20.0 On completion of the first placement students should be adequately equipped to undertake appropriate optometric clinical investigation and management of typical patients presenting within the relevant (supervised) practice environment.  In the context of a first clinical placement position, each student will be able to demonstrate:<ul> <li>Strong skills in clinical history taking.</li> <li>Strong communication skills with patients, outlining the reasons for various forms of examination and the resulting action of an optometric examination.</li> <li>A clear ability to conduct an eye examination for patients with a range of ophthalmic conditions.</li> <li>Sound decision making when considering the range of testing and examination methods options.</li> <li>Solid optometric skills relevant to each presenting clinical situation.</li> <li>Sound skills in relation to the dispensing of optical appliances.</li> <li>Sound skills in cases of onward referral of patients to other clinical professionals.</li></ul>  Supervised clinical experience with satisfactory progress towards the accumulation of adequate minimum patient numbers for eye examinations and dispensing. For the two placements combined currently set at 600 patient episodes* with eye examinations including at least 100 presbyopes, 30 contact lens aftercare, 10 contact lens fitting, 20 low vision patients (poor VA or visual field), 20 children, 10 binocular vision anomalies and dispensings including at least 50 multifocals, 50 single vision, 10 low vision aids (optical or electronic), 10 lifestyle (occupational / leisure / sport) dispensing, 5 lenses with >+/-5.00DS).* No more than 20% can be contact lenses Continuous electronic recording of clinical experience will take place via the completion of an online log book using Sharepoint. This will include details of patient episodes and stage 2 core competency sign-offs (covering acquisition of communication skills, professional conduct, refractive management, optical appliances, ocular examination and technique, ocular abnormalities, contact lenses and binocular vision). The specific competencies are detailed on Blackboard and modelled on the GOC Handbook 2015 Appendix H version. 0 Other 100% Progress in accumulation of clinical skills monitored periodically during the placement (formally audited at 2 and 4 months via personal visit or telephone call) and via supervisor grading on completion of the placement.An OSCE assessment will be held during/around week 11 and week 21 of the Placement in the university clinics. Each will feature a circuit of five 10-minute stations assessing clinical skills, data interpretation, history taking and recording, and patient communication.Overall mark: for this unit, 45% of the overall mark will be derived from the mid-placement OSCE, 45% from the end of placement OSCE and 10% from the supervisor grading.A pass is required in each fourth year unit for final stage 2 competency sign off. Progress reviewed by supervisor on an ongoing basis. Results of the mid-placement and end of placement OSCEs will be fed-back to the student.
