<p>You will be introduced to the scientific method and essential ideas about how it is implemented in drug discovery and optimisation. You will learn essential skills for using the literature and scientific communication that will inform your project dissertation and presentation. </p>

<p>The unit aims to:</p><p>Develop theoretical background knowledge in diverse research areas within pharmaceutical sciences towards designing and developing novel research proposals and plans and understanding the methodological approaches used to address specific research questions in a coherent and conceptually informed manner. </p>
<p>Appraise the importance of formulating a research problem and creating a research hypothesis</p><p>Produce a research plan</p><p>Interpret research results and justify the conclusions supported by the results</p>
<p>Recognize the potential of using alternative experimental approaches to answer the same or similar scientific questions</p><p>Develop the ability to critically evaluate the results obtained for accuracy and precision</p><p>Interpret data relevant to a specific research question</p><p>Evaluate assumptions and consequences of different perspectives in reaching conclusions</p><p>Make sense of new information </p>

<p>This module will be delivered in a face-to-face format over 6 weeks (block 2). Teaching material, including lectures that will be available online either prior to face-to-face (F2F) teaching sessions/tutorials or after live/F2F delivery. The face-to-face time will consist of a series of lectures and workshops in which core concepts (introduced through pre-reading) will be re-capped and further developed. When possible, lectures will be recorded and distributed online. Several of the workshops will be student led under a journal club format during which students present a selected relevant research paper. Alongside this, on-going support will be provided both online and F2F. </p>
