PHIL60052 Ethics 15 Semester 2 Postgraduate Taught Level 7 Stephen Ingram Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 7.5 The exact content differs from year to year, but topics covered may include: whether there are objective moral facts, what we can hold fellow persons accountable for, the nature of virtue, how value relates to our reasons to act, whether we are morally responsible for our character, and when (if ever) is punishment justified. The aim of this course is to familiarise students with some central philosophical concepts in ethics On completion of this unit successful participants will have: (a) read and understood some of the main texts from the relevant reading lists and from elsewhere; (b) attended the seminars, and participated in discussion; (c) acquired and developed the analytic skills which are necessary for the formation of their own considered views, for the evaluation of questions, and for putting forward good answers. Teaching will take place in weekly two-hour seminars. Students will be assigned reading and preparatory questions for each seminar. Every two-hour session will consist of group-based discussion of the readings set, together with some contextualising from the seminar leader wherever appropriate. Meetings will normally start with a short student presentation, which summarises the assigned reading and raises questions for further discussion.Students will also have the opportunity to discuss their private reading and writing assignments one-to-one with the tutor. 2 Written assignment (inc essay) 100% Y Seminars 20 0 130 Timetable
