PHYS20180 (full year) course is for

For students completing:

BSc/ MPhys Physics

BSc/ MPhys Physics with Astrophysics

MPhys Physics with Studies in Europe who have satisfied the language requirement.

Classes:

One day per week on either Tuesday or Friday throughout the session.

Laboratory times are 10.00-5.00.

Attendance is obligatory.

Organisation:

The second year teaching laboratory is located on the fourth floor and hosts experiments on general physics, electricity and magnetism, optics, vacuum and astrophysics. Nuclear physics experiments are located on the second floor and the electronics laboratory is on the third floor.

The laboratory unit includes Amplifiers and Feedback PHYS20181E f appropriate for a particular degree programme PHYS20811.

Experiments taking place in the teaching laboratories normally last for three weeks, and will be supervised by a demonstrator with a small group of students. There will be opportunities to ask questions, examine the equipment and make suggestions for measurements. There are other experiments that can be conducted remotely (without attending the teaching laboratory) and these will also have a three week duration. Several Laboratory Reports are required to be submitted during the year (four reports for PHYS20180). Submission dates will be posted well in advance and reports that are submitted after the deadline will be penalised in accordance with University policy.

How components are weighted for PHYS20180:

Professional Development module (10%)

Experiments (58%)

Lab reports (joint reports 13%, individual reports 19%)

Assessment:

Student performance on each experiment is assessed by the demonstrator/supervisor during the course of the experiment and by a final interview. Assessment takes into account: physics understanding, quality of data analysis, error analysis and quality of notes in Laboratory Notebook. For some of the experiments the interview includes a short oral presentation.

To pass this unit, students must obtain 40% overall; and have completed and been assessed in experiments corresponding to 50% or more of the scheduled days for lab experiments, each with a mark of 40% or more excluding late penalties; and have submitted one individual lab report per semester of lab assessed at 40% or more excluding late penalties. Students in danger of failing due to lab reports or experiments will be notified by the lab tutor during the semester when this becomes apparent, and will be directed to remedial action that needs to be taken. This may include completion of experimental work during the semester at a time consistent with their timetable. Students who are failing at the end of the year due to lab reports may be required to submit reports or other work as directed. Students who are failing at the end of the year due to non-completion of experiments will fail laboratory on work and attendance. Students with mitigating circumstances will be dealt with by the MCC who may vary the above provisions as appropriate.

Late submissions of lab. reports: The standard penalties as detailed in Section 10.1 of the UG Handbook will apply.

Late interviews: Late penalties will be incurred if an interview is not completed within one week after the end of the experiment (i.e. revert to the usual interview window). Interviews on S3 experiments must be completed by the end of week 1 of S4 or they will receive a mark of zero. Similarly interviews on S4 experiments must be completed by the end of week 13.

Students must satisfy the laboratory work and attendance requirements and obtain a pass (i.e. at least 40%) in order to proceed to the third year. Laboratory facilities are not available for resits. A student who has failed may be permitted to submit further assessments, based on laboratory work already carried out, if these are needed to satisfy work and attendance requirements or to pass.

Amplifiers and Feedback:

Classes: 2 two-hour lectures and 3 days laboratory in S3. Each laboratory session will be preceded by a lecture describing the theoretical details of the experiments.

Assessment: Laboratory interview on completion of the course. The credit rating is part of the laboratory credit rating.

PHYS20181F Professional Development

PHYS20181F Professional Development is a compulsory module for all second year undergraduates in the Department of Physics and Astronomy

Professional Development runs in semester 3

The sub-module is worth 10% of overall module mark

Assessment:

The course unit contains the following assessed components (with assessment weighting in brackets):

Academic Writing Skills module (10%). This is an online module, designed to help you improve your scientific writing skills. The deadline for completing this module is week 3

Short physics essay (60%). You will need to write a short (800-1000 word) essay on a physics-related subject and upload it to Blackboard. The deadline for submitting your essay is the end of week 6

Short presentation (20%). You will also need to give a short presentation on your essay topic (7 mins talk + 3 mins Q&A). Presentations will take place in personal tutor groups. This session can take place in week 7 or 8

Essay peer marking (10%). Students will be allocated 3 essays that they will need to mark and give feedback. The marking process is anonymous and is completed online (on Blackboard). Essays will be made available for marking at the start of week 10 and the deadline for completing the marking is the end of week 11
