    <Content>&lt;p class="x"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;PHYS20280 (1 semester)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;For student completing:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;	&lt;li&gt;BSc/ MMath&amp;amp;Phys Maths with Physics -&amp;nbsp;Semester 3 or 4 depending on option choices&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;BSc/ MPhys Physics with Philosophy -&amp;nbsp;Semester 3 only&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;BSc/Mphys Physics with Theoretical Physics - Semester 3 only&lt;/li&gt;	&lt;li&gt;BSc/ MPhys Physics with Studies in Europe - Semester 3 -&amp;nbsp;If language requirement satisfied, progress to full year labs&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Classes:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;One day per week on either Tuesday or Friday throughout the session.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;Laboratory times are 10.00-5.00.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;Attendance is obligatory.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Organisation:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The second year teaching laboratory is located on the fourth floor and hosts experiments on general physics, electricity and magnetism, optics, vacuum and astrophysics.&amp;nbsp; Nuclear physics experiments are located on the second floor and the electronics laboratory is on the third floor.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The laboratory unit includes Amplifiers and Feedback PHYS20181E f appropriate for a particular degree programme&amp;nbsp;PHYS20811.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Experiments taking place in the teaching laboratories normally last for three weeks, and will be supervised by a demonstrator with a small group of students. There will be opportunities to ask questions, examine the equipment and make suggestions for measurements. There are other experiments that can be conducted remotely (without attending the teaching laboratory) and these will also have a three week duration. Several Laboratory Reports are required to be submitted during the year (four reports for PHYS20180). Submission dates will be posted well in advance and reports that are submitted after the deadline will be penalised in accordance with University policy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The contribution to the final course mark is as follows:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Professional Development module (20%)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Experiments (52%)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Lab reports (joint report 11%, individual report 17% )&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Assessment:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(60,60,60)"&gt;Student performance on each experiment is assessed by the demonstrator/supervisor during the course of the experiment and by a final interview. Assessment takes into account: physics understanding, quality of data analysis, error analysis and quality of notes in Laboratory Notebook. For some of the experiments the interview includes a short oral presentation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To pass this unit, students must obtain 40% overall; and have completed and been assessed in experiments corresponding to 50% or more of the scheduled days for lab experiments, each with a mark of 40% or more excluding late penalties; and have submitted one individual lab report per semester of lab assessed at 40% or more excluding late penalties. Students in danger of failing due to lab reports or experiments will be notified by the lab tutor during the semester when this becomes apparent, and will be directed to remedial action that needs to be taken. This may include completion of experimental work during the semester at a time consistent with their timetable. Students who are failing at the end of the year due to lab reports may be required to submit reports or other work as directed. Students who are failing at the end of the year due to non-completion of experiments will fail laboratory on work and attendance. More general comments are written on the marked sheets, copies of which are returned to the students along with the marked reports.
