The course will explore transformative changes &lsquo;from above&rsquo; and also consider how social movements contest dominant political frames.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>This course provides an overview of politics in Britain since the 1940s. Using the lens of hegemony, it explores the nature and durability of the social and economic consensus identified with the early post-war decades, and considers how successive political projects have set new foundations for British politics. The first half of course explores and investigates significant processes of major political transformations and the concrete historical conditions that existed. The second half of the course explores a diverse range of social movements. The course will reflect on the ways in which these social movements provided a challenge to the dominant politics of the time. We will connect this historical understanding with contemporary politics in the UK. The tutorial preparations will include academic readings and watching documentaries.</p> <p>The aim of this course is to provide an in depth understanding of British politics since the 1940s, considering in turn how far governments adhered to a dominant social-democratic policy paradigm after 1945, and similarly a post-Thatcherite or neoliberal paradigm since the 1970s. In the second part of the course, we will be looking at social movements that have challenged the dominant politics of the time to challenge the status quo. We will look into feminism, British Black Power, youth culture and struggles over housing.
