    <Content>&lt;p&gt;The Politics department is delighted to offer this new module in partnership with Citizens UK North West.&amp;nbsp; Created in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Citizens UK is now a national organisation with 17 local &amp;lsquo;chapters&amp;rsquo;, and around 100 staff.&amp;nbsp; Some of their successful campaigns include work on the Living Wage.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://www.citizensuk.org/about-us/who-we-are/"&gt;https://www.citizensuk.org/about-us/who-we-are/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://www.citizensuk.org/about-us/what-is-community-organising/"&gt;https://www.citizensuk.org/about-us/what-is-community-organising/&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Community organising is a form of citizen political participation.&amp;nbsp; It focuses on counter-hegemonic forms of citizen-led mobilisation and lobbying, to generate social change.&amp;nbsp; It typically has a focus on social justice and the interest of groups with less formal power.&amp;nbsp; The term is most closely associated with high-profile writings of Paulo Freire, known for his work on critical pedagogy, and the work of the theorist and activist Saul Alinksy, known for his work in Chicago in the 1970s, and his pithy and distinctive advice to citizen activists such as, &amp;ldquo;if your people are not having a ball, there&amp;rsquo;s something wrong with the tactic&amp;rdquo; (Alinksy, 1989, p.128).&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Community organising has evolved into a number of &amp;lsquo;schools&amp;rsquo; or traditions, which have been adopted across many diverse contexts around the world, including in the UK.&amp;nbsp; Indeed, community organising-style tactics were credited with helping the election of Barack Obama, who had been a community organiser in Chicago.&amp;nbsp; It remains a topical and relevant topic for those interested in effective forms of citizen particiaption.&amp;nbsp; It also offers rich ground for academic debate around the heavily debated and contested views on power and social change.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Students will undertake practical activities with citizen groups in Greater Manchester.&amp;nbsp; These experiences, and other empirical examples would be used to understand theory.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;</Content>

Some of the workshops will be held off-campus to conduct hands-on community organising work.&amp;nbsp; Each of the workshop sessions will cover a mix of the academic readings, and some practical content, with practical experiences integrated into the module.
