Students will arrange supervision meetings with their supervisor, and the supervisor will act as an advisor at all stages of the project. However, it is fundamental to the unit that the learning outcomes are achieved through significant independent learning on the part of the student; students are expected to be self-motivated and proactive in their interactions with their supervisor. Having conducted the research and analysed the resulting data, students will produce a written report, emulating the style of a published research paper. The research topic will be chosen from a selection offered by members of staff contributing to the Psychology programme, subject to available places for individual members of staff. Upon completion of tasks associated with the empirical project, supervisors will award each student a professionalism mark. This is designed to reward students who manage their time well, show initiative (where possible), attend meetings, and conduct their interactions with their supervisor, co-researchers, participants and other parties in mature and professional manner. Supervisors will provide advice on all aspects of the project, including management, although students are expected to be self-motivated and proactive in their interactions with their supervisor. Supervisors may direct students to key reading, but it is the student’s job to fully research the area under investigation. Supervisors are responsible for providing sufficient guidance and support where required data analyses have not been taught in earlier in the degree.
