RELT10192 20 Semester 2 Undergraduate Level 1 Alexander Samely Unit coordinator Religions & Theology 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' First part HE study/Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 10.0 <p>The course introduces you to the study of the beliefs and practices of Judaism alongside non-religious Jewish identities, linking Jewish identity to questions of ethnic and gender identity, tradition, religious communities and remembered history.</p> <p>The course introduces you to the academic study of the beliefs and practices of Judaism, as an example of the study of religious cultures more generally. You will explore questions of ethnic and gender identity, tradition, religious communities and remembered history. We will address the origins of Judaism in the Hebrew Bible; the notion of Israel as an extended “family”; and community-oriented notions divine commandments and worship. Jewish group identity is partly grounded in biblical narrative and Talmudic law, and you will get to know they key forms of Jewish literary expression, as well as the role which the interpretation of Torah, notions of religious leadership and mystical ideas have played. You will encounter some of the effects of anti-Semitism on Jewish life, and how Judaism has changed under the influence of non-Jewish cultures. The readings relating to each lecture topic are discussed in the seminar of the week. You should prepare the lecture materials (available on Canvas) and the reading in the days before the seminar. You will have an opportunity to introduce the seminar reading at group meetings, and contribute critically to the of every weekly theme. The reading assignments require regular work outside classes and in advance of the seminars, practicing a number of skills, including close study of assigned texts, note taking, summarizing and excerpting, and the creation of texts in note form.
