Ideally this will be a paid role, but students might choose to work for a charity or not-for-profit organization where salaries may not be possible. As a minimum, the organization should offer a contribution toward expenses, such as free/subsidized accommodation, food, and/or travel. The placement must be approved by the SoSS Placement Team and the School Employability Lead. The content of the unit will be professionally focused with the student working in a defined role over the course of the placement. Students will be expected to complete two ‘Reflective Learning Diaries’ via Blackboard, which will detail their learning experience throughout the placement. The completion of the placement and these diaries will determine whether students pass or fail the placement year. The SoSS Placement Team will liaise with students throughout the placement year ensuring that the student is engaging with (a) the identified supervisor/mentor at the placement, and (b) the Reflective Learning Diaries, which should be completed at specific points during the placement year.  Students are responsible for finding and securing their own placements. However, they will be supported by the SoSS Placement Team and Careers Service throughout this process. For example, the Careers Service and Placements Team will run workshops and talks relating to placements and employability; students will have access to the Professional Experience Year online resource hub; vacancies will be circulated by Careers Service via a weekly placement bulletin.
