Professional Placement Year

SOCS30010 Professional Placement Year 120 Full year Undergraduate Level 3 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Last part of a Bachelors ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 60.0 This professional placement year will provide the opportunity for students to spend up to 10 months studying in a professional UK or international organisation that has some relevance to global social challenges. Students will conduct work tasks and interact professionally with members of staff within their host organisation, demonstrating the skills they have already learned on the programme, and developing new ones to apply in future settings.   The aims of this professional placement year are to: <ul> <li>Immerse students in a professional working environment </li> <li>Encourage students to interact professionally with other staff in a UK/international workplace setting </li> <li>Develop students’ awareness and understanding of global social challenges especially through a workplace perspective.</li></ul> <ul> <li>Demonstrate understanding of required employability skills during the professional placement</li></ul> <ul> <li>Collaborate with professional staff in the context of a work environment </li></ul> <ul> <li>Articulate how the professional placement has contributed to understanding key programme topics and themes </li></ul> <ul> <li>Evaluate relevant organisational policies and practices</li></ul> The professional placement year will to a large extent depend on the approach and provisions of the host organisation, however it is expected that these will be discussed and checked in advance to ensure a good variety of learning techniques and application of skill sets. Students enrolled on a professional placement year will be expected to submit blog posts on a regular basis to document their learning and experiences, and university staff will also reach out to students and be otherwise available to discuss progress and any concerns students have. In addition, students will deliver a presentation on return to Manchester to outline and discuss their professional placement experiences and how these connect to the BA GSC programme. When undertaking their professional placement, the student experience will be safeguarded by staff proactively contacting students periodically for a one-to-one update on their placement and any concerns to be aware of. As part of the placement, students will be required to submit short blog posts with fixed (informal) deadlines – if these deadlines are missed, this would be a sign for staff to contact students to check on their progress and welfare.  0 Other 100% Pass/Fail - Blog posts (2500 words: 4x 625 words each, end of Semester 2)Pass/Fail – Presentation (15 minutes, end of Semester 2) Feedback to students is provided in the following ways: <ul> <li>Informal and verbal feedback on their placement performance for the duration of the placement – achieved by regular interaction/online meetings with the student </li> <li>Written feedback for Pass/Fail assessments to be provided within standard SoSS timeframes </li> <li>A discussion of any feedback provided by the placement provider </li></ul> 0 0 0 Scheduled activity hours - Contact hours 10Independent study hours - 1200 notional hours of learning
