SOWK60773 Applied Mental Health Law 15 Variable teaching patterns Postgraduate Taught Level 7 Mark Cooper Unit coordinator 1 FHEQ level (Framework for Higher Education Qualifications) ' Masters/Integrated Masters P4 ' European Credit Transfer & Accumulation System Rating : 7.5 1/ This is the final taught unit of the AMHP Programme which aims to further develop the students’ applied knowledge of the Mental Health Act (MHA), “a very complex piece of legislation which is often poorly understood” (Jones, 2016. v). The Unit will also consider the increasingly complex interface between the MHA, Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights Act and Children Act. 2/ The taught sessions of this Unit will cover: -The assessment of mental capacity in the AMHP context. -The Mental Capacity Act / Mental Health Act interface. -Interviewing in “a suitable manner”. -Nearest Relative Dilemmas -Community Treatment Orders, Guardianship and ‘control in the community’. -Consent to Treatment. -The admission of children and young people. 3/ By the end of the Unit students are expected to demonstrate their ability to accurately apply the law in complex practical scenarios, including explicitly recording the statutory basis for their intervention.   The unit aims to produce students who can: 1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding and an ability to synthesise information in relation a range of mental health legislation, including the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act, the Human Rights Act and childrens legislation. 2. Retrieve and accurately apply the legislation to formulate solutions for complex ‘real-world’ problems, under conditions where there are time-management pressures. 3. Corroborate their interventions by citing the relevant statute law, statutory guidance or case-law. 4. PS1  Accurately apply the legislation to formulate solutions for complex ‘real-world’ problems, under conditions where there are time-management pressures. PS2  Accurately corroborate their interventions by citing the relevant statute law, statutory guidance, or case-law.   TS1 Assimilate, analyse and synthesise information from various sources.   Other All the students are currently registered health or social care professionals. Most students are sponsored to attend the AMHP programme by Local Authorities (although a small number are self-funding). Upon completion of all the taught units and practice portfolio, students will be eligible to be approved by a Local Authority to act as AMHP’s and undertake statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983. 1/ The teaching will be provided on campus via face-to-face lectures. 2/ Assignment guidance will be provided via face-to-face seminars and this will be supplemented with asynchronistic content on the Nearpod platform. Following the end of the timetabled dates, further online sessions will be offered to support students with the assignment. These will include formative learning opportunities.   1 Written exam 100% All students will receive detailed feedback on their assignment submission via Turnitin and have the opportunity for a 1:2:1 tutorial if required.
