This course unit covers the fundamentals of Spanish linguistics, with special attention being paid to the sounds, the words and the sentences of Spanish. Relevant comparisons with English are made when appropriate. Dialectal variation as well as the implications of linguistic analysis for the teaching and learning of second languages are also discussed.

 </MarketingOverview>
 <UnitOverview Applicant="" Label="Course unit overview" Student="Y">

This course unit introduces students to the linguistic analysis of present-day Spanish. After a brief introduction to linguistics (the scientific study of human language), the course focuses on the study of Spanish, with special reference to its sounds, its words and its sentences. The course covers in detail the system of sounds of Spanish, their properties, their possibilities for combination, as well as the difficulties faced by native speakers of English when acquiring Spanish. Similarly, the unit looks at the structure and classification of words, and the advantages of applying this knowledge to facilitating second-language learning with regard to vocabulary acquisition. Lastly, the module investigates Spanish sentences, especially the different word orders, structures and word combinations that are possible in Spanish. Further, the course touches on issues pertaining to language acquisition and sociolinguistics, in particular with regard to language variation across Spanish, a language spoken by around 500 million native speakers (and with around 23 million learners) around the globe. Throughout the semester, systematic comparisons with English and other linguistic varieties will be drawn when appropriate.
