On successful completion of the course, students should be able to perform at Level C1/C2 of the Common European Framework for Languages. Students on the Modern Languages and Business & Management Programme take a strand of the translation and writing skills seminars where the thematic focus is on business and management issues.  This course unit consists of language tuition in spoken and written Spanish at proficiency level and focuses on the practice of a wide variety of language and language-related skills which will help learners use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Other In order to promote intercultural skills and business awareness the course syllabus includes a variety of cultural topics strongly based on the experience of the Year Abroad touching on issues of law and justice, immigration, politics and marketing. Additionally, the MLBM strand of this module gives students an insight into the economy of a selection of Spanish-speaking countries and offers them training in writing business reports and proposals. This course uses a functional and contextual approach. It includes practice in oral, aural and reading skills, and translation from and into Spanish. A variety of forms of written Spanish are studied and attention is paid to questions of style and register. The MLBM strand of this module gives students an insight into the economy of a selection of Spanish-speaking countries and offers them training in writing business reports and proposals.The unit attaches great importance to class discussion and collaborative group and pair work. Given the nature of language learning, students will be expected to attend all classes and to prepare adequately for them in order to be able to participate actively in class discussion and group activities. Students will also be expected to engage in regular independent language learning devoting, on average, a minimum of five hours per week to work on their language skills outside the classroom.  To support and manage teaching and learning, this course uses Canvas as its web-based learning environment. Every student should try to log into Canvas as early as possible in the year. Students will find essential information on the course, class materials, feedback as well as a variety of extra resources to consolidate the grammar learned in class and to encourage independent learning. Students will be required to complete weekly online tests and to participate in discussion forums.The official Facebook page and Twitter account of the Department are used for additional e-learning content, news and to promote networking.As extracurricular activities, this module offers the opportunity for students to contribute to a newspaper (El Periódico de Español) and to participate in a series of cultural events organised by the Instituto Cervantes.
