These disciplines will include sociology, history, medicine, drama and American Studies (music and film). An historic overview of the construction of racialised discourses will be presented. The ways in which institutions have tried to tackle the issues of prejudice, racism and xenophobia will be also examined. On completion of the course students will be expected to:    - Have knowledge of the historical construction of racialised discourses. - Understand a range of approaches to issues of 'race,'ethnicity and diversity - Apply this understanding to an analysis of institutional forms. - Assess the centrality of racism in the development and structure of contemporary British  society. - Ability to reflect on their own position in relation to diversity in Britain (through a workshop with the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre)   These objectives will form the basis upon which students will be examined.   <ul> <li> Key concepts relating to diversity in Britain, such as multiculturalism, nation-state and globalisation, racism, ethnicity and inequality</li> <li> Historical understanding of migration in the formation of British nationality and British demographics</li> <li> Understanding of the way in which these concepts have become embedded in institutional contexts</li> </ul> <ul> <li> Critical awareness of approaching key concepts</li> <li> Comparative analysis</li> <li> Academic approaches to issues that have key public policy components</li> <li> Appreciation of different disciplinary approaches to the same topic</li> </ul> <ul> <li> Engagement with different types of data</li> <li> Use of resources provided by the Central Library, particularly the Ahmed Iqbal Centre</li> <li> Transferable Skills and Personal Qualities:</li> <li> Presentation skills</li> <li> Writing skills</li> <li> Engagement with IT via blackboard</li> </ul> 0 Other 30% 2 Written assignment (inc essay) 70% Multiple choice exam (open book) (30%) and one review essay (70%).
