The spoken form is almost identical to Hindi, the principal difference between the two languages being the choice of alphabet. This course is for absolute beginners. It is designed for those who wish to attain a basic understanding of the Urdu language covering four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It aims to introduce students to the Urdu alphabet, the basic language structure and the basics of Urdu grammar. Students will also acquire limited vocabulary to be able to read simple texts and conduct basic conversation in key areas of everyday communication. One three-hour seminar per week, delivered through blended learning which integrates on campus and on-line instruction as necessary. This will also include online digital learning available via Blackboard and supplemented by extra online resources to aid students in their independent learning.In order to develop their communicative skills, students will engage in pair work and group work activities, and will have the opportunity to listen to and read a range of adapted and authentic texts. Traditional exercises and written work will be used for grammar practice and consolidation.
